PSA:

Acetaminophen/paracetamol has a hard stop upper dose limit, above which it becomes extremely toxic.

That limit is 4g (8 “extra strength” (500mg) tablets) in 24 hours (about 2 tablets every 6 hours).

A single dose of 22 extra strength tablets can kill you.

Taking 12 or more tablets per day for more than a week can also kill you (this is about 3 tablets every 6 hours).

Symptoms of overdose take up to 24 hours to manifest, and are fairly difficult to distinguish from other problems. They include abdominal pain (especially right upper quadrant), nausea, malaise, and confusion.

The antidote (n-acetylcystine) must be given within 8hours of ingestion in order to be useful.

After 10 hours the only thing that will work is a liver transplant.

You might think “why would I ever accidentally take so much?”

Well, acetaminophen is in almost everything in the cold/flu/pain aisle. Migraine combos like Excedrin, cold and flu combos like NyQuil, basically anything that says “non-aspirin pain relief”, and anything that’s branded as a fever reducer. It’s all probably acetaminophen/paracetamol.

So the goal of this post is to get you to read the labels on your medications. Because taking taking Tylenol and NyQuil together for a week (like you might if you had the flu) could kill you.

fire emoji for Civilization and/or 4X games in general?

now that endless space 2 and stellaris exist there’s no excuse to keep putting linear tech trees in 4X games. they’re both just a gargantuan waste of potential strategic depth and (in the case of ‘historical’ 4Xs like civ) end up encoding a lot of racist and colonialist ideology into your game mechanics

sure! so the fundamental reality of technology is that it is all entirely contextual. if you traveled back in time to ancient rome with an iphone it’d just be a very expensive mirror that doesn’t work that well because you wouldn’t have electricity or an internet connection or a phone signal. if you invent a brand new submarine you’ll have a better time selling it to the USA than to mongolia. cultures only develop technologies that make sense in their environments–there’s a very funny mitchell and webb sketch that illustrates this well

when encountering other cultures, colonial european anthropologists instead conceptualized technology as a single, linear line of development (the way it works in civ!)–where the lack of specifically european technologies were used as an indicator that the indigenous peoples were ‘primitive’, or somehow lesser–at an 'inferior’ stage of 'technological development’. this is the kind of ideology that gave rise to the 'civilizing mission’ and many other similar fig-leafs for the extractionist and violent facts of colonialism.

so to give an example of how this stuff is baked into civ’s mechanics: if you are playing as the inca empire and you want to build machu picchu, you need the 'engineering’ technology, which is locked behind the 'wheel’ technology. which is fucking nonsense, because the inca empire never made extensive use of the wheel–not because they were 'less advanced’ than other cultures or 'didn’t discover it’, but because wheels are not actually very useful when your territory spans a lot of mountains and you have absolutely no access to large beasts of burden

civ’s linear conception of 'technological progress’ also means that it loves to recreate the 'vanishing indian’ myth–that is, that the indigenous peoples of the americas are somehow 'ancient’ or 'bygone’ people, instead of people who were the victims of genocide and continue to exist and have actively developing cultures to this day. for example, the aztecs unlock their 'jaguar warrior’ unique unit at the beginning of the game, in the 'ancient era’ (when of course, jaguar warriors were a social formation of the triple alliance which was in fact cotemperanous with the conquistador, which in civ vi is a special unit that arrives dozens or hundreds of turns after the jaguar warrior). their unique building, the tlachtli, is unlocked in the 'classical era’. again–this linear model of progress positions the aztecs as contemporaneous with the ancient greeks, which is just vastly untrue and founded in the colonialist idea that these people are 'primitive’.

so tldr, systems like stellaris or endless space 2, where technological advancement in one area won’t necessarily correlate to advancement in a different area, allows for more accurate representations for why certain areas and cultures adopt (or don’t adopt) certain technologies. civ’s linear 'tech X leads to tech Y leads to tech Z’ model is identical to colonial ideas about 'progress’ and ironically about 'civilization’ that were used to justify imperialism

“Dont drink coffee after 2 PM” is such a neurotypical issue that sounds made up. Such a thing couldnt happen to me, ADHD Georg, who has coffee past 9:30 PM and can still fall asleep freely because I have a natural toxicity resistance to caffeine.

Btw if I say things like “by god” or “good lord” in posts please be aware I don’t mean it in a catholic way I mean it in a 1950s scientist reacting in horror after they create an evil creature in the lab set in the distant future year of 2005

io che nonostante sia atea dica “grazie agli dei” e simili perché si io non credo in niente ma miliardi di persone hanno religioni e dei differenti ed io non voglio far sentire escluso nessuno

im frankly lucky the above reblog is about how theyre an atheist because there is nothing more terrifying than saying something slightly blasphemous and seeing a paragraph of italian in your replies
